Sewer line problems are one major issue a standard home inspection cannot fully evaluate because the underground sewer line is largely hidden from view.

Here are five issues a sewer camera inspection may uncover:
1. Root Intrusion
Tree and shrub roots can enter sewer lines through small cracks or pipe joints. As roots grow, they can restrict flow and eventually contribute to backups or damage.
2. Cracked or Damaged Pipes
Older piping materials, soil movement, installation issues and deterioration can result in cracks or other damage that cannot be seen during a standard home inspection.
3. Blockages and Buildup
Grease, debris and other material can accumulate inside a sewer line and restrict drainage. A camera inspection provides a direct look inside the pipe.
4. Offset or Separated Pipe Sections
Sections of sewer piping can shift or separate over time. These conditions may interfere with drainage and can allow soil or roots to enter the line.
5. Bellies or Low Areas in the Sewer Line
A section of piping that has settled can create a low area where water and waste collect instead of flowing properly toward the sewer connection.

Sewer line problems can be expensive to repair, which is why inspecting the line before purchasing a home can provide valuable information. The EPA also provides information on proper wastewater and septic system management.
Greenlight Home Inspections provides professional sewer camera inspections throughout Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads area. Our sewer scope inspections include video documentation so you can see what is happening inside the line.
